    A lot of people get the wrong end of the stick about Ricky Tomlinson.

    For a start, his name is Eric, though only Her Majesty's Prison Service ever seems to have called him that. And although he has a reputation as a left-wing militant who later made it big on the box, he started out as red, white and blue Tory who had much more in common with Alf Garnett than Arthur Scargill.

    Another surprise is that the "my arse" layabout Jim Royle in BBC comedy The Royle Family was once a skilled tradesman, a plasterer who served a six-year apprenticeship.
