Rwanda has recalled its permanent envoy to the United Nations, Ambassador Eugène-Richard Gasana in a Wednesday cabinet meeting.

During his tenure at the United Nations, Rwanda was in 2013 elected to sit on the UN Security Council for two years.

Ambassador Gasana, 54, who has been in diplomatic service for two decades, was also the state minister in Charge of Cooperation- a post that gave him powers to represent his country at the United Nations in matters that require ministerial presence.

When Gasana was appointed state minister in 2012, Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo, said: “Ambassador Gasana has performed very well in his duties,” adding that his promotion was well deserved.

The Wednesday cabinet meeting, chaired by President Paul Kagame, gave no indication as to why Gasana was “recalled” – as put in the cabinet resolutions.
